JKIA reminds you of _________?

****
BusinessWeek has an interesting article how (major) airports reflect the country at large.

So what does JKIA remind you of?

I think JKIA is a little like River Road... bustling but seedy. Folks sleeping on the sidewalks. Dirty. Multiple dukas on either side of the 'walkway/road'. Il-mannered staff. Unattended desks. Matatu stand.

Totally unkempt & neglected is what I know of JKIA. Whoever's in charge of that place cares zilch about the country and their own job. I love Kenya but JKIA is an eyesore.

last december as I landed at JKIA i welcomed by a slaugter house kind of stench. the place is still shody looking and I still wonder why they want guys to be filling those yellow forms yet they know Kenyans cannot have double citizenship.

plus in one of the taxfree shops there they dont take cards. how are you going to profit from foreign currency if you cannot accept visa electons for example.

Oh it is very representative...like mentalacrobatics who had to wait an hour for his luggage, I have had to do the same many a time, where in other countries it takes a maximum of 10 to 15 mins to have your luggage on the conveyor belt. Oh the shody corruption. The last time I went home, there I was lining up to get my passport stamped and this young woman (obviously someone's daughter) only important when she landed seeing as she was in ECONOMY like the rest of us was escorted by some JKIA official and another man carrying her handluggage INCLUDING her handbag, she was ushered to the front while we all had to wait mr.porter got her stuff stamped and done and off she waltzed to get her bags...the look of disgust I gave her, I hope she never forgets! Good thing she had to wait for an hour to get her bags like the rest of us commoners! corruption, neglect, ineffeciency, the list goes on! It's such a crying shame!

Sparkles...

And the king of all ironies is that the international departure lounge is somehow neat, better organized & does look like an airport.
The arrival lounge is one of the worst I've seen anywhere & yep corruption is the order of day there, restrooms are tiny, stinky, poorly lit and resemble janitor's WC.

Lots of work and proper management needs to go into JKIA. I love my country but shudder to think we talk of inviting more tourists when the entry point looks & smells like a tired sweaty gym.

aikey: There is no separate arrival & departure lounge at JKIA... which is a security nightmare as well...

I think your assessment is brilliant. "A little like River Road... bustling but seedy." Never saw that before but now I see it.
