Spare the rod and spoil the child...

What's wrong with the kids?

I remember the riots in university - that were less over 'rights' than allowances & food.

There is no point in destroying dormitory blocks and torching buildings...

For every kid caught with petrol intending to destroy property should be thoroughly whipped then expelled...

Me thinks they are in line to become MPs... considering the utterances of ntimama and his ilk...

"whipped then expelled?" What?

I fail to see the reason for such gross liniency! Not in this day and age?

Burning a dormitory = ARSON! Fullstop.

Simply put, every young man/woman in any learning institution must learn that there is rule of law in this land! And that rule applies to every individual, despite having acted as a group or as an individual!

As such, burning down a dorm or any other structure for that matter should be treated as ARSON and anyone found guilty should face the full force of the law.

What comes to mind is way back while at University; we would engage in mass-mediocrity; rioting and stone cars at free will!

Then came the rule that once your are caught rioting, you'd face the law individually! Trust you me, it worked!

ehh.. when is the last time you heard of a university riot?

Does anyone even care WHY the riots started in the first place? Because the leaders/ eduation bosses screwed up last years KCSE results...they have YET to get themselves together and now rumours are flying that the MOCKs can be used as results. If you went through the 844 system you know how important those results are...not everyone can go abroad or join private institutions...so the students lives are on the hands of folk who cant manage the education system! Take THEM to court..and maybe we wont have riots!!!!!

CT-I agree.

I think since the banning of caning, student discipline has only gone one way down. That at a time when its needed even more because student classes are getting larger.

Exams, have to be done whether they'll be used as the main results.

Jababoeku - Perhaps a stint in the rural reaches of Kenya where little grows unless you till the land and fetch water from a couple of miles off... will teach them a lesson or two...

This issue is no out of hand. But of course, when students are almost sitting exams they get restless (we used to do the same in campo) and easily irritable. Its not about the ban on caning. i suggest three things;

1. The teachers need to be extra watchful and should indeed manage students very closely especially around exams periods.
2. The media need to stop giving courage to others to riot by highlighting heavily where it has happened. I believe (and i stand to be corrected) many schools that went on strike this week would not have if they had not seen what was in the media. Giving this issue so much prominence in the media is only serving to encourage others to do it.
3. We should have a law that bans the purchase of fuel in gallons.Fuel should only be put into vehicles! I know that it may seem ridicoulus but if we did, we probably reduce the incidences by half. It worked in Molo during post election violence when houses were being torched. (but of course i dont have a solutions how people who have generators or who need kerosene will buy their fuel)
